Notice your posture as you are reading this article…. Is it possible you looking down at a handheld device, engaging in the serious but harmful position text neck?
Definition: head forward, shoulders rounded, and back slumped.
This position, also known as “text neck,” is a real epidemic and is causing serious neck issues. Text neck compresses and tightens the muscle, tendon, and ligament structures in front of the neck while lengthening the muscles, tendon, and ligament structures behind the neck.
Here are a couple facts:
- The average human head weighs about 11 pounds.
- Tilting your head forward and downward increases the gravitational pull on the skull.
- The force extended on an adult’s head when viewing something at a 60 degree angle is equivalent to 60 pounds.
What does this mean?
This means that this posture can lead to long term muscle strain, pinched nerves, chronic neck pain and headaches.
In this video, I’ll talk about text neck, how to hold your phone properly to avoid neck strains, and demonstrate stretches for your neck.
